The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) announced the ninth edition of its flagship event, Power Summit 2025, set to take place on September 17–18, 2025, in Kathmandu. The announcement was made during a press conference on Thursday, where IPPAN leadership highlighted the strategic importance of the Summit in shaping Nepal’s energy future.
Under the theme “Mission 28,500 MW: Powering Nepal, Energizing Region”, the Summit aims to position Nepal as a regional powerhouse for clean energy. Organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal, with India as the Country Partner through the Embassy of India in Nepal, the event will see participation from national and international organizations, agencies, and companies.
Private Sector’s Pivotal Role
IPPAN President Ganesh Karki emphasized the private sector’s critical contribution to Nepal’s energy sector since the Electricity Act 1992. “The private sector accounts for over 80% of Nepal’s total energy production, contributing 2,900 MW out of the current installed capacity of 3,602 MW,” Karki stated. He credited favorable government investment policies for enabling the private sector to mobilize over Rs. 1,300 billion in investments, with plans to invest an additional Rs. 5,000 billion.
Nepal’s energy journey began 114 years ago with its first power plant, yet it took until recent decades to reach 3,600 MW. The government’s Energy Development Roadmap-2081 now sets an ambitious target of generating 28,500 MW by 2035. Karki underscored that achieving this goal hinges on the active participation of the private sector, which has driven rapid growth in just 25 years since entering the energy market.
A Global Platform for Energy Innovation
The Summit is expected to attract over 1,000 participants from 30 countries, including senior government officials, diplomats, international experts, investors, financial institutions, and private sector representatives. Distinguished attendees will include Nepal’s Prime Minister, high-level dignitaries, and key stakeholders in the energy ecosystem.
Ananda Chaudhary, Vice-President and Coordinator of the Power Summit Main Event Committee, noted that the event builds on the success of previous Summits (2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2023). It aims to reinforce Nepal’s standing in the global energy community while offering actionable recommendations for achieving net-zero goals, strengthening infrastructure, and advancing regional market integration.
Key Focus Areas
The Summit will feature policy debates, success stories, and experience-sharing among experts and stakeholders. Discussions will cover:
Infrastructure challenges and solutions
Climate change impacts and disaster risk reduction
Regional consumption patterns
Implementation of the Energy Development Roadmap
Promoting green and clean energy in Nepal and South Asia
Advancing electricity and carbon trading
Developing innovative financial instruments
Ensuring energy security
Expanding cross-border infrastructure for regional connectivity
IPPAN envisions the Summit as a platform to position Nepal as a leader in green energy, addressing regional and international priorities while fostering effective policy-making through shared best practices.
